What is a photo?

James Bareham, future guest of the pod, has written an interesting essay on the topic of what a photo is. I remember back when I studied Art at college we talked about photography a lot as part of Art history. Painters were initially dismissive of technology that would only recreate what was in front of the operator and with the advent of technology like Photoshop, Lightroom and the enormous market for presets you can be absolutely sure that human beings are not wired to simply take what’s put in front of them most of the time. Even film, the qualities of different stocks, are a choice. So when it comes down to it, what is a photo? Maybe it’s like a meal, the outcome of a recipe.

Becca’s back

Continuing our filmic theme, the Pentax 17 has accompanied Becca on many trips of late and she’s excited to share what she does and doesn’t like about this fantastic modern film camera. Most camera opinion videos start with specs, this one, starts with a warranty. IYKYK*

Her video inspired me to pick up a film camera I have and take it with me to Germany this week. I’ll share the results on my return in a couple of weeks time.

No film? No problem!

A lot of camera fans out there who don’t love using film point to Fuji’s cameras as a way to get the feel of film in images without the cost of film instantly. No problems when going through x-ray machines, no waiting to see your photos, maximum vibes, minimum effort.

Emily was lukewarm on the X100v and has now finally got her hands on the vi. You can watch her video below. I always enjoy her films, we’ll have to get her back on the show at some point :)
